Oh Vito Mannone

Post  cyprussyd on 2017-07-01, 7:04 pm

Vito Mannone could stay at Sunderland next season, and help their bid to return to the Premier League.

The Italian goalkeeper was expected to leave the Black Cats this summer after relegation, but new manager Simon Grayson could now convince him to stay.

With Jordan Pickford already exiting the club for Everton, Mannone would become the first choice goalkeeper at the club, with Mika and under-23s star Max Stryjek providing back-up.
Earlier in the summer the 29-year-old’s agent Roberto de Fanti said that an exit was likely.
De Fanti, also the agent of Fabio Borini, said at the time: “We say that unfortunately the relegation of Sunderland is near and with it the most important players are destined to leave the club including Vito and Fabio.”
That prompted some interest in the former arsenal goalkeeper, with Watford and a few Italian Serie A sides taking a closer look.
However, that has gone quiet and De Fanti focused his full attention on sealing Borini’s exit to AC Milan.

Mannone, meanwhile, is still at Sunderland and gave a hint that his future could be on Wearside after posting on Instagram on Saturday morning ahead of the club’s training trip to Austria.

He wrote alongside a picture of him in a Sunderland tracksuit: “Looking forward to a week of hard work in Austria.”
The trip, just short of a week long, will offer Grayson the opportunity to get to know his new squad and assess the areas which need to be strengthened.

If he can convince Mannone to stay then it will be a huge boost, given his limited funds.
The Italian has just 12 months left on his contract, however, so if the Black Cats don’t sell this summer they risk losing him on a free unless they also offer him a new deal.
