Sunderland v Celtic..Match Day Thread

Post  cyprussyd on 2017-06-28, 7:32 pm

Sunderland will welcome Scottish treble winners Celtic to Wearside on Saturday 29 July 2017 in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Stadium of Light.
Both clubs share the same principal partner in Dafabet and in recognition of this, the game - the first pre-season friendly to be staged at the stadium since 2008 – will be known as the Dafabet Cup, with the respective trophy awarded to the winning side.
As well as the milestone of 20 years at the Stadium of Light, 2017 marks the 50th anniversary of Celtic’s historic European Cup win in Lisbon, when they became the first British club to lift the prestigious trophy. The legendary team, known as the Lisbon Lions, have been invited by Sunderland to attend the game in recognition of their achievements in 1967. The passionate Celtic fans are renowned for travelling in large numbers and Wearside is looking forward to welcoming a big visiting crowd and creating a celebratory and vibrant atmosphere between both sets of fans.
Fans will be able to enjoy family friendly and special season card holder pricing, with junior season card holders able to take in the action for free.
The iconic home of Sunderland hosted its first game on July 31, 1997, representing the beginning of a new era in stadium building in the UK. To this day, it remains one of the best modern stadia in Europe.
Sunderland ambassador Kevin Ball, who captained the Sunderland side in that game against Ajax, is delighted that Celtic will be visiting next month. He said: “To have Celtic here to celebrate the 20-year anniversary, almost to the day, will be a very special occasion for everyone involved with Sunderland.
“The two sets of fans share the same principles of loyalty and passion for their clubs and both teams have long and proud histories. It’s fantastic that Celtic have accepted our invitation to share this special day in what is also a very special year for them with the anniversary of the famous victory in Lisbon. I have no doubt it will be a great game, in front of a full house and something both Sunderland and Celtic supporters will love.”
The game will also be the largest gathering of former Sunderland players in the club’s history, with many of the stars of the last twenty years set to attend. Kevin Ball is looking forward to seeing some familiar faces, adding: “Bringing together former players and club legends will really make the day special. Recognising and celebrating our history, whether it is recent or long-standing is something that is hugely important to us and keeping our former players actively involved with the club ensures that we retain a strong connection with our history.”

As a Celtic fan, its a shame all the boycotting and the green brigade being banned is effecting so much.Scottish in general love the Geordies and north east. I have no doubt there will still be 5k or so going, would have been more than double under different circumstances.
I would guess most Celtic fans support Sunderland in that they have a struggle, a constant upwards battle against the powers that be. Good luck.

Don't leave it too long Cretan, I'd love to meet you but I'm 69 now so could leave this mortal coil any time! I've yet to meet a Mackem that I haven't liked, they are most definitely a rare breed, also, we get to play for the "Friendship Cup" again this season!

I will be going, but really shocked that this fixture has been arranged due to the history of when Glasgow clubs play here.. I fully expect to here about people being stabbed or hurt due to this game.. I will be doing my best to make sure my lads avoid going to pubs before and after this game..

Many people I know will not only be avoiding this game, but avoiding going to the city due to the past experiences of when Celtic and Rangers play here..

I'm pleased to say that being a Sunderland fan with many friends and family who are Celtic supporters I am not only going to the game but very much looking forward to it.

In all my years following football I have seen some trouble but have never been involved in it or threatened by it.

Going to Sunderland AFC v Celtic? Important ticket and travel advice for fans Sunderland host Celtic at the Stadium of Light on Saturday ECHO REPORTER Email Published: 14:09 Wednesday 26 July 2017 0 HAVE YOUR SAY Sunderland AFC has issued important ticket and travel advice to fans ahead of Saturday's game with Celtic. To celebrate 20 years at the Stadium of Light, the Black Cats will host the Scottish champions as they contest the Dafabet Cup. The game kicks off at 3pm, with thousands of Celtic fans expected on Wearside for the game. The club has issued important ticket and travel advice ahead of the game: TICKETS The Stadium of Light ticket office will be open from 10am on Saturday morning for supporters wishing to buy tickets, cash turnstiles will also be available for Sunderland fans. Stadium turnstiles will open at 1.30pm and supporters are advised to arrive early to avoid queues or delays, especially if they have not pre-purchased a ticket. Tickets for the game are still available from the Stadium of Light ticket office, priced at £15 for adults, with over 65s £12 and under 22s £7. Children under 16 can get a ticket for £5. A family ticket (one adult & one child under 16) in the north-west corner of the stadium is available for £18. Food and beverage outlets will be situated outside the south-east corner of the stadium, opening from 12pm. TRAVEL The Sheepfolds area will be used for coach parking, with a high volume of visiting supporters attending there will be no access for vehicles, other than agreed coaches. Being mindful of the volume of coaches expected, pedestrians are strongly advised to avoid the Sheepfolds area and instead access the stadium site via Millennium Bridge or Keir Hardy Way. Public transport is expected to be busy on the day and in particular the Metro system, with fans from both clubs likely to be using the service. Supporters are therefore strongly advised to leave plenty of time for their journey. St Peter’s Station affords easy access and is only a short walk from the stadium (please note, St Peter’s is closer than the Stadium of Light station). Further details are available [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] The matchday park and ride service will be operating from the retail park off the A1231. There is no parking available in the areas directly surrounding the stadium, ample parking is available in Sunderland city centre however, which is just a short walk from the stadium.
