The big hitters attending shows that socialism is no longer a dirty word in the Labour Party. But also recognising the history of the party is important, and understanding its links to the past, make it more likely the leadership and party colleagues will make sensible decisions on the future. All good as far as I am concerned Very Happy

I never went to Durham but went to Bedlington Miners Picnic from aged 13/14 until I was about 16/17. All day drinking back then was a one off and many were unable to control themselves and overindulged. I was too young to drink but saw a few sorry sights and yes, quite a lot of trouble I recall. But I was a teenager in the 70's, at the height of skinhead culture so there seemed to be bother everywhere in those days. Had forgotten about that, sad to say.

The trouble with it now is that the city is full of drunken piss heads.
Last time I was there it was a red hot day & the pubs were all heaving.
There is an off license next to the Royal County Hotel.
There was blokes kicking off because the beer was too warm.
The lass behind the counter tried explaining that it's not in the fridge long enough to get cold as it sells as fast as they fill it.
Canny day out if you can avoid the arseholes. Sadly, they are all over.

I am not a ex miner but I loved going to the Gala. I loved the crowds and watching the banners come streaming in. I loved watching the "young uns" dancing in the streets, I loved watching the faces of proud miners carrying their banners, the fair, packed pubs, sitting on the Racecourse, chatting the lasses up, and yes the train ride. Yes I loved it all. I am going to give it a go this year for the first time in years.
By the way, I always gave Hylton Colliery or  Castletown Pit as it was known my support.

Don't get me wrong I have pride in the mining villages
And respect there work .
But the big meeting as we called it is just not my cup of tea

Forget the drunks, they have always been there, above is my youth and for me its what the Big Meeting is all about. People now dead and pits now closed, its remembering them.

In 1963 I was a member of Wheatley Hill Colliery Band and marched at the Big Meeting, a proud day.

A now defunct industry filled with nothing but nostalgia.
My granda did 57 years down the pits in Co Durham & he was pleased when the twats shut down so his grandsons didn't have to go underground & die of pit lung disease.

Nostalgia can be a good thing
