Alex McLeish mentioned in todays Echo. Another dinosaur imo in the Moyes mould but i dont think any players would dare cross him.

SUNDERLAND have made Nigel Pearson one of the main contenders for the managerial vacancy at the Stadium of Light, even though he is also strongly in the running for the Middlesbrough job.
Pearson is desperate to return to management this summer and has been shortlisted for the positions at both of the Wear-Tees rivals.
The 53-year-old has been out of work since leaving Derby County last October and is being seriously considered for the job at Sunderland by chief executive Martin Bain

Sunderland chief Martin Bain reveals he will appoint new manager 'quickly' as he hunts for right man

Sunderland chief executive Martin Bain says he is keen to appoint a new manager 'as quickly as possible' - but is determined to get the right man.

Bain is in charge of the finding a replacement for David Moyes, who stepped down as the Black Cats' boss two weeks ago today.

A host of names have been linked with the job, with Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes and Preston North End chief Simon Grayson currently leading the betting.

And Bain - who is expected to hold interviews with candidates this week - says he is working hard behind the scenes to get the right man in place.

Speaking to safc.com, Bain said: “The recruitment process is ongoing.
“Pre-season is an important period at any football club so naturally we are keen to conclude things as quickly as possible, whilst being mindful of the need to make the right appointment."
Sunderland also announced they will take on Bury at Gigg Lane on Friday, July 7 in their opening pre-season fixture.
The Black Cats will return to training on June 29 for initial fitness testing before the first team and the under-23s travel to Austria for a five-day training camp.

“Preparations for the new season are progressing well and our full plans for pre-season are close to being finalised," Bain added.
“The first team and the under 23s will spend a week together in Austria, which signals a much more joined up approach to the pre-season preparations.
"It is something that the club hasn’t done previously, so it will give the young players a great opportunity to train alongside their senior counterparts and experience the intensity required at first-team level."

Have a feeling most of those under 23s will be first teamers ,,,,, bring out your dead ,,,, fkn hell thats a lot of dead meat at the SOL doors awaiting the cart to take em away .
So the Austria training camp is for .... how many ? I'm guessing less than a team plus subs if Bain is doing his job and getting rid of said dead shyte .

Oh no this is Sunderland ,,, those tossers that royally fkd us over last season will get a jolly to Austria then be sold for buttons , well done Shorty pants YOU CLOWN .

Of all the names I've seen so far, I think McInnes would be your best bet, he's worked wonders at Aberdeen with very little money!   like

I dont think any of the managers mentioned fill any of us with hope. I do hope however that whoever is put in charge gets our 100% backing and none of us expect miracles.

Mid table at best next season and if we are lucky enough to finish higher to me it will have been a decent settling in season.

could it be Sunderland are struggling to sell the job to anyone? are managers of good standard not interested? that's why we have a delay of an appointment? Who knows.

Could it be that they're just not going to appoint the first person that comes along?

Could it be that they need to wait to talk to McInness properly? Could it be that they are willing to wait until he's back off holiday having identified him as a contender?

Could it be that they want to compare the contenders against each other properly?

Could it be that they've learned from the DiCanio experience?

Could it be that Middlesbrough, Hull, Crystal Palace, Leeds are all doing the same thing?

How could that be true?
A great job with a newly relegated club with only a few good players who you have to sell. A club who sack their manager on an annual basis. A club with no money for players and a club whose owner is so committed he wants to sell.

But we do have wonderful training facilities and great fans.

SUNDERLAND are closing the net on appointing a new manager and have reduced the list of contenders in the hope of getting a deal tied up by the end of the week.
Aberdeen’s Derek McInnes and Preston’s Simon Grayson are the front-runners. Nigel Pearson and Garry Monk, both under consideration at Middlesbrough, are among those to have also been seriously discussed.

Gary Monk would make me cringe if he became our next Manager . . . . he can't even be bothered (bovvad) to talk properly, the lazy tw*t (and he's not very good) Crying or Very sad
I don't think much of Nigel Pearson, but he's the best option (short term - as they usually are) from a bad list, as far as I'm concerned scratch
