Very simple for me, will hang on to the faint hope of great escape, enjoying the games until its a certainty then, 100% focus on next seasons adventure.

Seen it all before and always hope next season will be great, never is mind.

Not being a doom monger or anything (!) but I am sure many of us said the same at the end of the 1985/86 season. Remember what happend in 1986/87? affraid

In the olden days when supporters voted with their feet and were not constrained by season card loyalty poor performances led to low attendances.  More often than not when the team was winning in a lower league attendances increased significantly.

Not easy to explain other than a winning team seems to be worth watching whereas a decent performing losing team is abandoned.

Aye, I looked up attendances and in 1985/86 crowds for league games averaged around 16,000 and 1986/7 around 13,000. I think capacity was around 24,000 (??) so lots of people did stop going because what we were watching was so dire.

In fact crowds only picked up at the end of the 86/87 season when Bob Stokoe (God rest his soul) took over after McEnemy 'resigned'. Otherwise attendances would have been much lower than that average. In fact McEnemy's last game in charge was the 2-1 defeat against Sheffield United in front of just 8,544 at Roker Park. I was one of those long-suffering 8,544 and remember that match being utter dross and many other supporters around me in the Clock Stand saying that was the last straw (not quite that politely!)

Anyway as I keep saying, I just feel the same negativity now with Moyes, that many of us did back then when it became clear McEnemy was not only not the Messiah. but not even a very naughty boy! For me he was just an overpaid fraud, who failed badly when trying to use the same formula that had worked where he had been successful before. Sound familiar?
