Former Brighton and Hove Albion and Wycombe Wanderers defender Paul McCarthy has died aged 45 from a suspected heart attack.

McCarthy retired just five years ago after a spell at Ebbsfleet United, and the club have released a [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]statement confirming the news and paying tribute to the former Republic of Ireland U21 international.

"Ebbsfleet United FC are shocked and saddened to learn of the news about our FA Trophy-winning captain and former assistant Paul McCarthy, who died suddenly yesterday at the age of 45," the club said.

"Quite apart from going down in Fleet history as the man who lifted the Trophy at Wembley in 2008, Paul was a well-loved and popular figure throughout his long association with the club."

Former Ebbsfleet chairman Brian Kilcullen said: “Out of all the players I met, he is up at the top as both a person and player. Really, really sad news.”

Club secretary during Paul’s stay at the club Roly Edwards said: “On top of everything, he was a great family man. All of us that worked with him grew to love him.”

McCarthy's former clubs Brighton and Wycombe have both tweeted tributes to McCarthy, who made 181 league appearances for the Seagulls and figured in a further 212 matches for the Chairboys.

McCarthy spent 23 years as a professional footballer, joining Brighton in 1989 before switching the south coast for Wycombe seven years later. The Irish defender spent a further seven years at the club, reaching the semi-final of the FA Cup in 2001, scoring in the quarter-final victory over Leicester.

Spells at Oxford United, Hornchurch and Ebbsfleet United followed, with McCarthy winning the FA Trophy at the latter club.
