Remembrance Sunday

Post  Billy D on 2016-11-12, 2:25 pm

Tonight I will be staying at Jerry's & Nick's.
Tomorrow I will be back home to watch the Queen lay her wreath and listen to the Last Post.
Watch the old veterans marching & stand there proudly with their medals on.

No time for the politicians etc & their crocodile tears.

I have never managed to watch the parade without a tear.

That Saturday Night Albert Hall concert and poppy shower starts it for me. Over the years in Ch-le-Street the Roll of Honour and memorial was graffitied and became a meeting place for drinkers. All that stands now is an black marble obelisk outside the parish church in a not very conspicuous place.

Shameful really but with each new generation there seems to be less reverence or memory.

Watching Remembrance Sunday on BBC hugging my baby grand daughter, in tears at the stories of loss from the families of soldiers who were killed in recent times. It is not just those who died in past World Wars that need to be remembered, but the sacrifice of all from more recent conflicts too. And we must also remember and support those that did not die but came home forever changed, physically and mentally.

This day reminds us, year after year, that those of us who could never contemplate fighting or enduring the horrors of war, have a duty to honour all who serve their country and protect us, and the values we hold dear.

A good few years ago I took Annette for a ATOS assessment.
I waited for her in a small waiting room and tgere was one other person waiting for his assessment,  late 20's I guess.

We got talking, he told me he had returned from Afghanistan but didnt want to elaborate apart from saying his head was full of things he could not get rid of. It didnt takeca genius to realise he had seen tnings no one should see.

Our caring government felt he was OK to work, physically he was but mentally,  his doctor thought not.

Seemed a very unjust way to treat a man who had served his country.
