Is this negligent?

Post  canary-dave on 2016-03-14, 2:49 pm

A man has been arrested for leaving a child alone in his car while he weht into a shop for five minutes.

He's angry for being arrested, am I the only one who thinks this is a very irresponsible course of action?

He was on the Today programme this morning...The general opinion was that the CPS and Police were wrong although each case has to be viewed on its merits.

A couple of 2 year old died in Kirkaldy, Drowning in a fishpond next to their house. Whenever I am left with my new  two year old grandson I do not let him.out of my sight

The Police and Health and Safety Executive are considering prosecuting the landlord for not covering the fish tank in the garden. Never mind the landlord, what on earth possessed the parents not to ensure their twins' safety?

A little bit lost, leaving a child in the car is OK but leaving children in a garden with a fish pond is wrong, is that what we are saying?

Both wrong from what I can see, a lot can go wrong in 5 minutes

Yes and they have been slated but its so easy to make that one slip.

In my day you could go to Butlins and leave babies alone, bet you all remember that

I can plead guilty to leaving a child alone in a car, but he was asleep and it would have taken some time to undo the straps on his car seat to allow me at least ten minutes.

I have left a child in a car too. When they are asleep its always the easier decision to leave them than wake them up. But I never left the car out of my sight. So literally stopping outside the paper shop and running in for a paper or something. I have left them in the car sleeping when the car was on my own driveway too, often for an hour or more until they woke up, but always opened the windows a bit and checked every 5 or 10 minutes.

It was even a tradition in the cul-de-sac I lived in when my daughter was born for all the families to go round each others house to have a drink and some food and we all had kids asleep upstairs. One of the adults from each family popped back every half hour or so to check on them, and there was never any problems. Different times I know, but one reason I never criticised the McCanns because there but for the grace of God went myself and I think many other parents.

I went through this recently, 2 year old grandson in car and me getting diesel. I could have watched the car but decided to take him in with me. Chatted to a women who was also filling up and she said she was also in two minds.

However we tend to be over cautious

Hmm not sure about that.

The death of young children can be very sensitive for some folk. Some friends lost one of their children due to a cot death. The police of course have to check out for any foul play. My friends were and are still devestated...I think the others kids producing grandchildren has helped but they will never forget sweet William
