Bernadette Knill, former headteacher of Priory Woods Special School in Middlesbrough has been awarded an OBE for services to Children with Special Educational Needs.
Bernadette, 59, retired this year after 20 years at the school. She began working at the school, then known as Carisbrooke School, in 1995 as deputy headteacher, quickly becoming acting head and then headteacher in 1997.
She went into the profession in 1983 in Sunderland.
Bernadette, who lives in Coxhoe, County Durham, with husband John, said: “I’m very shocked about it - I wasn’t expecting it at all.
“It’s a real honour though.
“I’m almost a bit embarrassed to be honest because I was just doing my job.
“Any impact I’ve had on anyone, I couldn’t have done on my own. I’ve always had a fantastic team around me. It’s a real team effort.”
During her time at Carisbrooke and Priory Woods, Bernadette oversaw two big school moves, including a new build via the Building Schools for the Future programme.
The four most recent Ofsted reports for the school were rated outstanding.

The way she refuses to accept the accolade personally and nominates her supporting team shows it was very well deserved!

Well done Ma'am!
