Wild best: Dick Advocaat won’t try to tame ‘street fighter’ loan star Yann M’Vila

Yann M'Vila has made a big impression in his first few matches on loan for Sunderland

Dick Advocaat will not attempt to suddenly tame Yann M’Vila, despite the midfielder’s hugely impressive start to his Sunderland career.

M’Vila has been the pick of Sunderland’s summer signings so far, with the French international instantly adapting to Premier League football, despite seven months without a competitive game.

He’s from the street. If something happens on the street, everybody helps each other. Everybody fights.Dick Advocaat on Yann M’VilaThe on-loan Rubin Kazan man – who has a clause in his contract to join Sunderland permanently next summer – was tracked by a host of European heavyweights including Arsenal, Liverpool and Barcelona during his days at boyhood club Rennes.

But a series of on and off-the-field disciplinary problems with the Britanny outfit, internationally with France and in Russia have marred M’Vila’s developments over the last two or three years, while he was sent off for a headbutt during his maiden appearance in a red and white shirt for Sunderland Under-21s.

Sunderland boss Advocaat believes there will always be an edge to M’Vila’s game after a tough upbringing in Paris, yet he is encouraged to see that he has only witnessed the 25-year-old’s quality on the ball during his Premier League appearance.

Advocaat told the Echo: “He can control the game and he is a passer with great vision. I haven’t seen that temper in our games so far.

“He’s from the street. If something happens on the street, everybody helps each other. Everybody fights.

“That’s the way it is, although of course you can’t do that on the pitch.

“Roy Keane and Patrick Vieira were the same. You can’t change them, but M’Vila is a good player for us.

“I only see the games he’s playing and he needs a little bit more (fitness-wise).

“But he’s been a really good addition to the squad.”

The introduction of summer signings M’Vila and Ola Toivonen, coupled with the return to fitness of Jordi Gomez, has given Sunderland’s midfield a completely different complexion.

Lee Cattermole, Seb Larsson and Jack Rodwell – who all started the opening game of the season at Leicester City – all found themselves on the bench against Spurs last weekend and are not expected to be in the starting XI at Bournemouth today.

And Advocaat admits that his overhaul has been done with a view to giving Sunderland more control of the ball in the middle of the park.

“The organisation of the defence is better because we have players in the team now who can handle the ball well,” added Advocaat.

“They control the ball and they don’t panic.

“Jordi Gomez always knows how to take care of the ball. Others don’t know always know, but he does, exactly.

“Sometimes it’s too slow (with Gomez) but I don’t know if we can change that.”

I don't understand why you'd talk about that side of his game - it hasn't shown up in games so far other than in the u21 game. Let's not be talking it up and drawing attention to it or we'll have another midfielder who picks up a yellow every time he shouts "BOO".

I only see good things about M'Vila....He is big and strong and can pick a pass, yes he will probably get sent off sooner or later...but there again the same could be said of the man he seems to have replaced...Cattermole....I must admit I was a little worried when he got sent off for the reserves but I've been impressed with him in the games he's played so far

My concern is a bigger club will come in for him unless we show we can improve, get up the league and he sees the promise for next season that we can go on to better things.
