Latest on jermaine lens.....dynamo Kiev are denying any contact with Sunderland in respect of any transfer, although,  they do concede the player who is absent from the club at present "due to family reasons"...lol.... Does want to leave after becoming disallusioned with eastern European football.

Sebastian Coates: Sunderland sign Liverpool defender
Sunderland have signed defender Sebastian Coates from Liverpool on a four-year deal for an undisclosed fee.
Coates played 13 times for the Black Cats on loan last season, helping them stay in the Premier League.
The 24-year-old Uruguay international, who has been playing at the Copa America, is Dick Advocaat's first signing as Sunderland head coach.
Coates made just 17 starts in his four years at Liverpool, who have already completed six summer signings.
Signed by Advocaat's predecessor Gus Poyet in September, Coates returned from injury to play a key role in the club's successful fight against relegation.
He is set to return for pre-season training next week after being given extra time off following his international exertions.
Sunderland owner Ellis Short has made funds available for Advocaat to strengthen his squad.
Sporting director Lee Congerton said: "Sebastian was an important part of the team under Dick last season, and we're delighted that he has joined us on a permanent basis.
"He has Premier League experience and after spending last season on loan with us, he will be able to settle into the team very quickly."

Reports from various rags are suggesting a deal is imminent to bring young Chelsea midfield playmaker Marco van ginkel into the club on loan. Newcastle are our main rivals.....

Course they are.... must be sharing our scouts to save money or something  Laughing

Don't know anything about the player but young, midfield and playmaker all tick the right boxes.

Would rather have him permanently like, as this will be just be a development opportunity for another club's player (cf Stuart Downing, Johnny Evans, Danny Welbeck, Danny Rose et al) and then if they don't use him themselves they will get a better price for him when they sell him on. Also with such loans I worry about our own youths; what about Watmore and others who are desperate to get their chance, surely they deserve a shot at the first team as well?

Still it seems we are still searching for bargains and if we are looking at loans anyway this is the sort of loan I prefer, rather than a 30+ year old that can't get in the parent clubs first team.

Sky understands a fee agreed.

Matthews looks Sunderland-bound
OPEN GALLERY 1Adam Matthews could be Sunderland-bound.

Sunderland have agreed a fee with Celtic for sought-after full-back Adam Matthews.

Press Association Sport understands the Black Cats have a deal in place for the 23-year-old, who has been linked with a move back to his native Wales in recent months.
Matthews joined Celtic from Cardiff in July 2011 and has a year remaining on his contract.
He made 42 appearances for the Bhoys last season and picked up a fourth Scottish Premiership winners' medal in the process.
The news of Sunderland's bid comes after a busy few days for the Wearside club, who completed a permanent deal for Liverpool defender Sebastian Coates on Wednesday night and then tied up key midfielder Lee Cattermole with a five-year contract extension.

Sunderland in talks to sign Zenit's Nicolas Lombaerts and Kiev's Jeremain Lens

Nicolas Lombaerts was signed by Dick Advocaat for Zenit in 2007

Sunderland are in talks with Zenit Saint Petersburg and Dynamo Kiev over the respective signings of Nicolas Lombaerts and Jeremain Lens, according to Sky sources.
It is understood that Belgium international defender Lombaerts, who was signed by Dick Advocaat for Zenit in 2007, would cost a fee in the region of £5m.
Dutch forward Lens, meanwhile, has 29 caps for the Netherlands and could fetch up to £8.5m

Sky sources understand Sunderland would have no problem paying those fees for the players but they are just two of a number of signings manager Advocaat is trying to make.
Lombaerts, 30, began his career at Club Brugge before a three-year spell with Gent, and he has 35 caps for Belgium.
Lens, 27, is an AZ Alkmaar youth graduate who moved to PSV Eindhoven in 2010 and scored 34 goals in 96 Eredivisie appearances. He joined Kiev in 2013.
On Wednesday, Sunderland confirmed the signing of Liverpool defender Sebastien Coates on a four-year deal after his successful season on loan last term.
Sunderland also confirmed on Thursday that captain Lee Cattermole has signed a new five-year deal.

Who is Adam Matthews? 10 things about Celtic star on verge of Sunderland move

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Wales international Adam Matthews

Ross Gregory

09:13Friday 03 July 2015

Sunderland are reported to be on the verge of signing Celtic defender Adam Matthews for £2million. But just who is he?

We take a look at what Black Cats fans can expect should the full-back move to Wearside.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Adam Matthews

1. Matthews is a Welsh international, having gained 12 caps for his country.

2. He was a talented rugby union player as a youngster, and was scouted by Ospreys before settling on football as a career.

3. As a kid, he had a trial at Swansea City but broke his arm. He was told to return when it healed but when he did, he was told their youth system was now full.

4. He instead joined Cardiff City, signing for their academy aged just eight.

5. Matthews played for the Cardif first team for the first time as a 15-year-old in a friendly against Haverfordwest County.

6. He made his full debut as a substitute against Charlton on April 21, 2009, aged 17.

7. He was named Football League Apprentice of the Year for the Championship in 2010.

8. Celtic swooped to sign Matthews on a free transfer in 2011 after his contract expired at Cardiff.

9. Matthews was invited to participate for Great Britain in the 2012 Olympics but didn’t make Stuart Pearce’s final squad.

10. As a youngster, he was a Liverpool fan while Arsenal and Manchester United have all shown an interest in signing the attack-minded right-back in the past.
