Keiren Westwood, released by Sunderland last summer, named in Championship Team of the Year

The Irishman has been fantastic since signing for Sheffield Wednesday in the summer.

Today has seen the PFA announce their Championship Team of the Year, with Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Keiren Westwood between the sticks.

The Irishman has been fantastic for the club this season, with 17 clean sheets the second best in the league behind Middlesbrough's Dimitrios Konstantopoulos.

His performances have saved Sheffield Wednesday countless points this term and he deserves his place in the XI.

It makes a decision Sunderland made last summer look very foolish.

Sunderland snapped up Costel Pantilimon on a free transfer from Manchester City in the summer. Sunderland also decided not to keep hold of Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Keiren Westwood.

That is now looking like a big mistake. Westwood went on to join Sheffield Wednesday in the summer on a two-year deal. It has proven to be a master-class of a signing.

Sunderland tarted the season with Vito Mannone between the sticks, but he failed to impress and after a horror show performance v Southampton he is now back-up.

But looking at how well Westwood has performed this season perhaps suggests that Sunderland shuld not have let Westwood go in the first place.

Yeah always thought that was an odd one. We strengthened the one area of the team we had excellent cover for!  confused

Good for him, a cracking keeper but, we and he did the right thing IMO.

Westwood had spent his Sunderland career on the bench and the seemed his fate with Mannone looking unmoveable.
Either he or Mannone would always be going to move, we could face the same problem in the summer if we stay up.

Served us well & would have continued to do so.

Do you really think the two we now have will stay for next season if we drop, I think not.

Westwood is a TRUE professional.
