Dickman calm ahead of Newcastle clash

Published: 03 February, 2015
by Matthew Shevlin

U18s ready for Newcastle test.
Elliott Dickman has urged his side to control their emotions ahead of Wednesday’s Wear-Tyne derby against Newcastle United in the FA Youth Cup at the Stadium of Light (KO 7pm).
The Young Black Cats saw off Ipswich Town in the fourth round to set up the highly-anticipated tie, and speaking to safc.com Dickman explained the need to keep calm as the Lads look to continue their cup run.
“Hopefully the lads will be able to control and channel their emotions in a positive manner, because they’re very excited and we want to compete whilst ensuring we remain in the game.
“Having the game at the stadium gives our players a big boost and we have already played there in the cup against Ipswich Town, so for the staff and for the players it will be another very good experience.”
He added: “Playing at the club’s first-team stadium is great but to do so against Newcastle United is something else, so let’s hope we are talking about a positive result post-match.”
The young Black Cats have also received a timely boost ahead of the game with Ethan Robson and Denver Hume returning to action.
The Lads have had the better of the league meetings between the two sides this season taking four points off the Magpies, but Dickman states Wednesday's match will be a very different encounter.
“Ethan Robson came back from injury and played on Saturday which is a massive plus, and Denver Hume also featured for 75 minutes as he continues his return.
“These games are different to the ones in the league because they bring out a little bit of nervousness with an added edge, so the important thing is to control that the best we can."
He continued: “We have already played them twice and we have done quite well although I believe they might have one or two players dropping down from their U21s, but that is no different to us because Rees Greenwood and Ethan Robson have been around the U21s and Michael Ledger has also been there recently.
“It is a similar scenario but the big thing will be which side is mentally brave because they will be the ones who succeed on Wednesday night.”
