Muhammad Ali

Post  cyprussyd on 2015-01-16, 7:31 am

Boxing great Muhammad Ali is back in hospital just one week after being discharged.
Ali, who turns 73 on Saturday, is receiving follow up care for a severe urinary tract infection but is expected to be released from hospital later today, family spokesman Bob Gunnell said.
"Ali hopes to celebrate his 73rd birthday on Saturday at home with his family," Mr Gunnell said.
Ali was admitted to an undisclosed hospital earlier this week. It was his second hospital visit in the last month.
The three-time former heavyweight champion was released from hospital on 7 January after a two-week stay for what was then thought to be pneumonia.
But doctors later found he had a severe bladder infection.
Ali, who is also an Olympic gold medallist, has suffered from Parkinson's disease since the 1980s.
Mr Gunnell said: "The Muhammad Ali family respectfully requests privacy. No further details are being released at this time."

..and he's a Muslim...

..who people don't have a problem with...

Perhaps as a famous personality he might be able to pour some oil on troubled waters...

A great boxer no doubt but he dodged his draft to Vietnam.
Refused to fight for his country while other American lads were dying over there.
That makes him a coward in my opinion.
Plus he was a loud mouth braggart until Joe Frazier shut his pie hole for him.
Never forget that time when Henry Cooper dumped him on his arse with that left hook.
Cassius didn't have a clue what had hit him.
What was his quote over Vietnam again?
Correct me if I'm wrong but it was something like, "Aint no gook ever gonna call me a nigger."

The quote attributed to him is: "I ain't got no quarrel with them Viet Cong,"

This is his actual statement in the archives of the Houston Chronicle that reported on it:

Why should they ask me to put on a uniform and go ten thousand miles from home and drop bombs and bullets on brown people in Vietnam while so-called Negro people in Louisville are treated like dogs and denied simple human rights?   No, I am not going ten thousand miles from home to help murder and burn another poor nation simply to continue the domination of white slave masters of the darker people the world over. This is the day when such evils must come to an end. I have been warned that to take such a stand would put my prestige in jeopardy and could cause me to lose millions of dollars which should accrue to me as the champion. But I have said it once and I will say it again. The real enemy of my people is right here. I will not disgrace my religion, my people or myself by becoming a tool to enslave those who are fighting for their own justice, freedom and equality…   If I thought the war was going to bring freedom and equality to twenty-two million of my people they wouldn’t have to draft me, I’d join tomorrow. But I either have to obey the laws of the land or the laws of Allah. I have nothing to lose by standing up for my beliefs. So I’ll go to jail. We’ve been in jail for four hundred years.

It is better to remain silent and let people think you are a fool, rather than open your mouth and remove all doubt!  Twisted Evil

I would guess that the vast majority of people will think that Ali was one of the best boxers of our time and that's why I am sorry to hear of his problems, well that along with him being a human being.

If I had been an American citizen at the time of Vietnam I would have dodged the draft, sometimes saying no is the brave thing to do, in my book.

TBH with you H, I enjoyed the semis over the final.
Went to both legs, still got the scars from Stamford Bridge.

I was at Stamford Bridge for the 'battle' as well. The turnstiles broke and we were late in and missed the first goal. It was such a scary night and we were in the posh seats, not on the terraces!  In the seats we weren't realy segregated, but at least we were in front of the police control area so we knew we were safe while we were there. At half time we were being eyeballed by chesea fans and it was raw hatred I could see, I didn't understand it and still don't confused  There was an old chap behind me and he said "I was at Dunkirk lassie and I was not as scared then as I am here tonight!" That is a true story  Shocked

At the end of the game were told to stay where we were so we could be escorted to the terrace with the rest of our away fans, and then we were all escorted to our buses through streets of hate filled Chelsea fans throwng bricks and all sorts, one of our supporters buses definitely had a window smashed by a brick. It really was the most terrifying night of my life. But we still WON!!!  Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Exactly, he should have shut his hole.

WHOOOOOOOSH
WHOOOOOOOSH!!!

Billy, what I love about you is what you see is what you get, you don't hide your disappointment behind niceties, you play the perfect angry young man because you ARE an angry young man! Fair play to you, I may not agree with you, but I defend your right to hold the views that you do!
I knew exactly what you meant David lad & tbh you're a man I'd like to meet.
Would love to have a drink with you sometime.
Got no beef with you at all.

I'm up for the derby at Easter!  beer
Hopefully I can make it.
Maybe we might be challenging for the friendly cup again next season.
Was there in '85, fabulous day.  canary
Yeah it was a brilliant day, apart for the result. Crying or Very sad  30 years on and I still think "If only Shaun Elliot had not been suspended and had played instead of David Corner!" Never mind ...... sigh...... tongue
TBH with you H, I enjoyed the semis over the final.
Went to both legs, still got the scars from Stamford Bridge.
Had to have my eye stitched due to a ten bob bit, lol.

Scary night indeed & without wishing to trivialise violence, back then I used to thrive on tense situations.
A real rush & a buzz as the adrenaline coursed through my body.
I'm not ashamed to admit, I gave as good as I got that night.
That said I was pleased to get back on the coach which got bricked.
One lad pushed out the shattered glass & threw it back & it hit a Chelsea lad square in the head.
A fella tried to patch me up with the first aid kit but blood was streaming down my face.
I felt no pain as I was pissed & so hyped up.
They dropped me off at Dryburn hospital & they put six stitches in my eye.
All in all a fun night.
